The Power of Perspective

Simon reaching workers in brick factory in Kanyakumari

Numbers 13:30. “Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, ‘We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”

We want to encourage disciple makers to get a vision from God and go for it. There are thousands of brick makers who need to hear the Good News! Let’s reach the unreached!

What was it that made Caleb different from the rest of the spies? They had gone on the same trip, seen the same things. But they cam back with very different perspectives.

Ten of the spies came back saying “it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. But the people who live there are powerful…” It is good, but … They saw the dream and vision, they saw the good things available to them. But they also saw the obstacles, difficulties and how powerful and great was their enemy. And this is where they chose to focus their attention.

Caleb was different. He had a confidence, a faith, that with God’s help they could “certainly do it.” He urged them to go up and take possession of the promise God had given. He was not ignorant of the obstacles and difficulties, but he refused to let those things make him stop moving forward. “Let’s go! Let’s do it!” This was his attitude.

Perspective (how we see things) is everything. Our perspective will determine our attitudes and our actions. Sometimes when I think about church planting movements and the task of seeing communities and peoples transformed, I am tempted to focus on the difficulties. There are times when I feel overwhelmed by all the impossibilities. Sometimes the giants look so big to me.

I want to be like Caleb though. I want to focus. on God; His ability and His promise. I want to be someone who says, “Let’s go up and take possession! We can certainly do it!” Let’s go bless these unreached peoples and see His Kingdom come among them. God has promised it! It is our inheritance to claim and ask God for the nations for His glory. Let’s go up. We can do it. Let’s stir up our faith in Him and what He has promised us. God is able. He can give us movements! He van bring hope, blessing and transforming peoples and nations.

Questions to consider

  1. Do you tend to be more like Caleb or more like the other spies? Do you usually see the positive or negative in situations?
  2. What difficulties or obstacles have you faced lately? When do you feel small or weak compared to those things? Ask God to give you a perspective like Caleb’s once again.

Pray with me:

Father, we confess that sometimes it is hard to keep the proper perspective. We see the promised land and all that is good, but then we focus on the difficulties and obstacles. Sometimes our discouraging words even pull others down around us. Please make us more like Caleb. Give us faith that we truly can do it. Give us courage to go and take the land You’ve promised. You are able Lord. Our hope and faith is in You!
