What does Jesus notice?

The other day when we went to our daughter Amy’s house for Rick’s birthday, I noticed something. When I took a photo of Simeon playing “happy birthday” on his ukulele for Rick, I noticed that Joe, the dad, was patting Lincoln’s chest to calm him down and give him attention and affection while Simeon was getting some attention by Rick, his Appa!

So today, when I got home, I started to think about things that Jesus noticed when he was here on earth.

The first story I thought of was the woman who touched the hem of his garment on a crowded road, and received healing in Mark 5.

He noticed a poor widow who gave two coins into the offering basket in Luke 21. He said she gave more than all the other people.

He also noticed a grieving widow in Luke 7 as he was walking down the road, and prayed for her son to be raised from the dead.

He also noticed Zachaeus up in a tree as he was passing by, walking on the road in Luke 19. He stopped, looked up and invited himself over for lunch! As a result Zachaeus’ whole household was saved.

When we were doing a zoom class for our Sri Lankan friends the other day, I was telling them to notice people God pointed out to them when they go out doing prayer walks. Notice when others begin to talk to you first, for instance. Notice if someone is lonely or crying. Notice who is friendly and wants to have a conversation. Notice people who are not in a hurry.

We need to keep asking God to show us who is open to Him. We want to be more like Jesus and seize the opportunities in front of us each day.

But we need to make time to go out on a mission and not be in such a hurry. It’s so easy to miss the things God points out to us. Sometimes when I don’t notice and reach out, I get a second chance when I see that person again.

Let’s pray for each other to keep going out and fishing for people in Jesus’ name.

Read Luke 19:1-10:

  1. What do we learn about God or Jesus?
  2. What do we learn about people?
  3. Which word or phrase stands out to you?
  4. How can we obey this word today?
  5. Who can we share this with?
