Last week we began a series focused on praying for unbelievers to come to Jesus. (see PRAY FOR THE LOST ). One of the challenges I find, in praying for unsaved friends and family, is “Where can I find faith to persevere in prayer when it doesn’t seem like there is any change?” This is particularly hard when it comes to our family. The best answer I know comes from listening to God speak to us through his word.
About six months ago I was reading through Isaiah, and came across a list of promises that God makes to his people in Isaiah 54. I was enjoying the comfort that comes from dwelling on God’s reassuring promises, when all of a sudden verse 13 hit me like lightning:
“All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children.” Isaiah 54:13
I could feel faith starting to rise up in my heart, but also a little bit of fear, “Lord, is this promise only for Israel, or is it also for your people today?” As I finished reading the chapter I sensed God reassuring me,
“This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their vindication from me, declares the Lord.” Isaiah 54:17
This was one of those times when I have learned that it is important to write down what I sense God is saying to me. It is so important to remember what we hear from the Lord. The enemy is constantly seeking to steal or choke out anything that God speaks to our hearts, and so we need to hang on tight to everything he says.
For months I have returned to these verses, reread what God spoke to me, and used what God said to give me faith for praying for each of my children and grandchildren. “O Father, may each of my children and grandchildren be taught by you!”
Imagine my surprise when I came across John 6:44 which we looked at last week and read the words of Jesus in verse 45.
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me” John 6:44-45
Here are the words of Jesus quoting from Isaiah 54:13 and applying them to the Father drawing people to his Son!
Thank you, Father, may you here our prayers and draw many to your Son Jesus, and may our children all be taught by you.
