In August, we brought a friend with us to teach in DehraDun India at the Mathrowalla Vineyard where we gathered leaders together from different vineyards to learn about the Disciple Making Movements.
Beau did a teaching he calls Share Anywhere that I would like to share with you! First he brought up James 1:19:
19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,
We want to meet people where they are and speak to their situation with compassion connecting God’s story with their story and our story too. We want them to know that we believe God is working today and can lovingly help them.
He was saying that when we begin to talk with someone who doesn’t know Jesus, we should first listen to their story. Everyone has a story and if you ask, people may tell you what they are going through, a difficult time they are having, a health issue, etc. Their problems may have to do with money, health, emotions, relationships, etc.
As they are sharing, we can try to recall a story in the Bible that speaks to this issue. It could be a story of Jesus healing someone, a money issue, a story about Jesus caring for people, or relationship stuff like loving one another.
He suggests that we briefly ask if we can share a story with them when they are finished. Just tell a story like in Matthew 6:26-27:
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[e]?
Just tell the story without even saying it comes from the Bible.
Then think of an instance in your own life where you needed God’s help in this same area and how God met your need briefly,
We didn’t know how we would be able to pay our taxes in April and I am not kidding but we received a check in the mail that covered the amount that we needed right before it was due!
Try this and see how it works! We can share anywhere as we listen to people’s stories, tell them a very short God story, and tell them how God has met needs in our lives!
Then ask them if you can pray for God to come and meet their need. Let them know that you will come back and see how they are doing in a week or so! You never know what God will do!
One time a neighbor of mine told me she was in debt over $20,000 in credit card bills, and after I prayed for her, she received a buy out from IBM and paid off all her debts! Her whole family believed God heard their prayers and came to Jesus.
