A week or so ago I wrote about the importance of being missional (ATTRACTIONAL OR MISSIONAL?).  It’s a subject I have been thinking a lot about, and specifically I have been praying about ways that I can become more missional.  One of the primary motivators for me has been Mark 1:17,  “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”

There are so many things Jesus could have identified as the result of following him.  You’ll become a part of my Kingdom.  You’ll receive forgiveness for your sins.  You’ll go to heaven, etc.  So many things change when we follow Jesus, and yet the one thing Jesus highlights is that he will send us out to fish for people.

Participating with Jesus in His mission to “seek and save the lost” is the hallmark of what it means to be a disciple.

My biggest problem with being more missional is “What do I say?”  There’s a very real part of me that wishes that it would be enough to just “be a good witness by the way I live my life.”

There are several problems with this quote.  First of all, none of the biographers from the first several hundred years after Francis lived, mention this quote.  Furthermore, Francis not only never said this, but it doesn’t represent something that he would have believed.  All of his biographers agree: Francis was not only known for loving the poor and caring for them, he was also a zealous evangelist who regularly preached the gospel in four or five villages a day.  The truth is, this quote reflects more the spirit of our own age than anything else.
