- Biologically, shepherds can’t make sheep. Sheep make sheep. In disciple making movements, this biological truth is applied spiritually. In the over 900 movements that exist today, local followers of Jesus (simple sheep) are active in discipling their lost friends and family, and planting new churches. How? When lost people become followers of Jesus, they quickly obey His command to make more “sheep,” and thus, laborers are found IN the harvest.
• Pray for God’s people all over the world to be willing to leave behind their fellow “sheep,” and follow Jesus’ example in Lk 15:1-7.
15 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. 2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” 3 Then Jesus told them this parable: 4 “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ 7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. Ask
God to forgive us, His Body, for relegating His commands in Mt. 28:18-20 to trained and/or paid professionals.
18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Pray for disciples of Jesus in both reached and unreached places, that we will all believe His promise in that passage and personally obey it. Today.
• Pray 1 Pet 2:24-25 for the worlds’ UPGs. (Robin Smith)
24 “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” 25 For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
Nothing thrills us more than to hear about young believers sharing with their peer group, starting new groups and making disciple makers. Sachin in North Delhi is doing just that over and over again. His brother Nitish is also making disciple makers. We have known them since they were small and came to Delhi with their families in desperate need. Just like it says in 1 Timothy 4:12, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.”
They are guiding new seekers by sharing stories from Creation to Christ in a simple way and it is working! God is working in small ways in small groups all over the place.
Let’s pray for more stories like these of disciples making disciples and new groups starting.
